Why Exhumation Matters
1. Government Regulations
In Singapore, the NEA enforces a 15-year burial period limit. Upon reaching this limit, graves must be exhumed. Families often take this opportunity to integrate their cultural or religious traditions into the Ancestor Relocation process.
2. Fulfilling a Wish
Ancestors who migrated to seek their fortunes and eventually passed away in distant lands may have expressed their wish to have their remains returned to their homeland to be laid to rest.
3. Customary Practices
In some ethnic groups or locations, it is customary to relocate the remains of the deceased after a set period of time. Shi Jin is performed during this time to relocate them to a more auspicious site blessed by favorable Feng Shui.
4. A Display of Filial Piety
Ancestral graves that are dilapidated due to aging may require an Ancestor Relocation Ceremony in order to preserve and honor the memory of the loved ones in a more presentable setting.
5. Logistic Convenience
When ancestors or relatives are buried in different locations, this may create logistical challenges during important occasions such as Qing Ming. By relocating ancestors to a single location, families can simplify the process of paying homage and make it easier for descendants to remember the ancestral resting place.
6. Unfavourable Feng Shui
Graves in sites with unfavourable Feng Shui may affect the descendants. To rectify this, an Ancestor Relocation ceremony is performed. Feng Shui is a cultural belief, and individuals may consider it based on their personal circumstances. It is provided for reference only.
